Serenity Now

05 Oct

A line from the 90s sitcom, Seinfeld, which Frank Costanza, George’s dad, had to say when he gets mad and to prevent his blood pressure from going up. But he yells it instead. SERENITY NOW! SERENITY NOW!

Ok let’s just calm down..

“Cheng Tng” from a no-name stall at Bedok Corner

“Cheng Tng” is one of Singapore’s favourite desserts. It is served hot or cold, to your preference. It is a bowl of a sweet beverage with lots of good stuff in it.

Lets talk about the “good stuff”. This is a Chinese dessert, so the ingredients are typically Chinese. There is actually no specific set of ingredients that you have to put in it. But usually there will be dried longans, pearl barley, gingko nuts and lotus seeds. For other variations, you can add dried persimmons, winter melon strips, dried red dates.

This is what I would call a harmonious dish. A great balance of yin and yang, hot and cold, dark and light. I live in the tropics, which means, the seasons I experience are hot, very hot and “wah lau! so damn hot lah!” (colloquially speaking, it means very hot). So it’s good to have cheng tng on a hot day, even if you have it hot, to feel its cooling effect. Perfect for body, mind and soul.

The dish does sound exotically harmonious (although Frank Costanza wasn’t. SERINITY NOW! Lol). Love the post
