The Final Straw

Chendol at B@Point, Johor Baru, Malaysia

Chendol is a cool and sweet dessert. It consists of the chendol itself (green jelly-like strips), red beans, coconut milk, gula melaka (palm sugar) and crushed ice. Some places get a little bit fancier and added other stuff like grass jelly (black jelly made from err… grass? Lol!), sweet corn kernels or even attap chee (seeds from a kind of palm tree in sweet syrup).

This one didn’t have red beans in it, but large kidney beans. I guess the they gave this an almost authentic taste. Served in a bowl with a somewhat out of place bubble tea straw. It just looked so weird having a bowl of something and a straw stuck in the middle of it. Eccentric! Not sure I like the look of this whole dish. But it tasted good. Perfect to cool down with on a hot day.

-hazrock, don’t huff and puff my house of straw
