That, to me, is a “rugged” pasta dish. Such bold, brassy flavours, achieved by a combination of anchovies, garlic, tomatoes, capers, black olives and chilli pepper flakes. Wow!
From what I’ve read about spaghetti alla puttanesca, the name itself is a little rude. It is Italian, literally translated as “spaghetti cooked whore’s style or in a whorish fashion”. Yikes! But I love Nigella Lawson‘s term for this, Slut Spaghetti.
There are a few stories how the dish got its name. One, because of its flavours. Like I said earlier, bold, brassy, in your face and almost vulgar. Two, because this can be cooked quickly, there are stories that “puttanas” (ladies of the night) make this in between err… customers.
Why should they have all the fun? I want to join in too! I mean, in eating this not the err.. other stuff they do.
Whatever it is, I love this dish. I intend to cook this again, for a quick meal. In between my household chores.
