Of Shahs and Maharajahs

Tandoori Chicken Set at Thohirah Restaurant. Served with Naan bread, lentil gravy and a kind of mint sauce.

North Indian food always conjure up images of Indian Royalty. The Shahs and Maharajahs riding on majestic elephants. And queens and princesses decked in jewellery from head to toe. And by royalty, I also mean the Bollywood royalty, those actors and actresses on Bollywood movies. One of the dresses I wore on my wedding was was a long flowy and bejeweled Indian costume. No kidding, that thing weighed a tonne! I don’t know how those people in Bollywood movies can dance in this. It’s heavy!

Anyway, back to the natural order of things. Food! Tandoori Chicken is cooked in a tandoor oven. Same goes for the naan bread which sometimes have garlic or cheese or raisins added. The chicken is marinated in spices and yoghurt which gives it a burst of piquant flavor. Eaten with a lentil or dhal gravy. I’m not sure about the mint sauce though. Maybe it was for balancing the slightly sour taste of the tandoori chicken. Whatever it is, this one gets an A+ from me!

Tampines Central used to be my playground. I used to live near Darul Ghufran Mosque. I’m around Tampines area almost every weekend cuz my parents still live there. But I haven’t been to prata wala. Thanks. Would love to check it out. πŸ™‚
