Bubur Putih Bubur Merah (Red and White Porridge)

It is an old Malay custom to make this sweet dessert for “thanksgiving”. By thanksgiving, I mean be thankful for what we achieved, a celebration. The Malay community used to make this to celebrate birthdays, or doing well in a major test in school. Hardly see this dessert these days. Birthday cakes, or eating at restaurants replace it. Sad to think this custom will be gone with the times.

Red and white porridge is made with glutinous rice. The “red” comes from palm sugar, is not really red but brown. And the “white” is from coconut milk.

My sister made the porridge above, to celebrate her oldest daughter blossoming into a young lady. So fast how kids grow.
